Clay (peloids) is a complex organomineral material with unique adsorptive and catalytic properties. In modern physiotherapy, the use of clay extends far beyond traditional folk remedies and has become part of evidence-based medicine. This article examines how the trace element composition of different types of clay affects cellular metabolism and in which cases peloid therapy is an effective rehabilitation method.

Biological Activity and Mechanisms of Action of Peloids

The use of peloids (therapeutic clays) is supported by both centuries of empirical experience and modern clinical research. Historically, the healing properties of clay were described by scholars such as Avicenna and Sebastian Kneipp. Today, peloid therapy is an important component of evidence-based physiotherapy, ranging from pulmonary rehabilitation at the Swiss health resort of Davos to comprehensive recovery programs in military hospitals, where clay therapy is combined with modern diagnostic methods.

The therapeutic effects of clay are based on its unique physicochemical properties:

1. Adsorptive and Antibacterial Activity
The fine particle structure of clay enables it to function as a powerful natural adsorbent. It can absorb toxins, metabolic by-products, and pathogenic microorganisms. The high bactericidal activity of clay is demonstrated by its ability to preserve organic substances (for example, by preventing milk from souring). In nature, these properties are essential for the survival of many species. For example, macaws consume clay to neutralize plant toxins.

2. Detoxification and Enterosorption
When taken orally, clay acts as an active detoxifying agent. Thanks to its high adhesive capacity, it binds both exogenous and endogenous toxins within the gastrointestinal tract, facilitating their safe elimination and helping to restore a healthy intestinal microbiota.

3. Thermal and Diffusion Effects
Peloid therapy has demonstrated high effectiveness as part of the комплексного treatment of musculoskeletal disorders, including arthritis and osteochondrosis. Methodology and Treatment Protocols

The effectiveness of home-based peloid therapy depends directly on maintaining the correct temperature, using high-quality raw materials, and following the recommended application protocol (exposure time).

1. External Use: Applications and Body Wraps

To prepare the mixture, clay powder is diluted with water until it reaches the consistency of a smooth, pliable paste.

  • Local Applications: Apply a 1–1.5 cm thick layer to the affected area (joints, fracture sites, areas affected by arthritis), secure it with a natural fabric, and keep it warm. The recommended exposure time is up to 2 hours.

  • Full-Body Wraps: For generalized body aches, use a clay solution prepared with 3–4 tablespoons of clay per 1 liter of water. Wrap the body in a sheet soaked in the solution and cover with a warm blanket for 1.5–2 hours.

  • Rubbing: For arthritis, rubbing the affected areas with clay water mixed with 2–3 crushed garlic cloves may help stimulate local blood circulation.

2. Physiotherapeutic Applications for ENT Disorders

  • Otorhinolaryngology (Sinusitis, Tonsillitis): For sinusitis, 1 cm thick clay applications are placed over the maxillary sinuses. For tonsillitis, gargling with a suspension of clay powder (1 teaspoon per glass of water) is considered effective, as is slowly dissolving small pieces of clay in the mouth to provide direct contact with the mucous membrane.

  • Pulmonology (Bronchitis): Therapy includes a 3-week course. During the first 14 days, clay applications are applied below the shoulder blades once daily for 2 hours. During the third week, clay compresses are applied to the chest area.

3. Internal Use and Dentistry

  • Gastroenterology: White clay (kaolin) is used to relieve symptoms of colitis and enteritis. Treatment begins with ½ teaspoon dissolved in a glass of water, gradually increasing the dose to 2 teaspoons. Course: 3 weeks of use followed by a 1-week break.

  • Dental Care: To strengthen the gums and tooth enamel, it is recommended to slowly dissolve small fragments of purified clay in the mouth, followed by drinking water.

4. Dermatology, Cosmetic Care, and Neurology

  • Treatment of Acne and Blackheads: A white clay mask prepared with a 40% alcohol solution and lemon juice is used. The recommended exposure time is 10–12 minutes.

  • Neurological Symptoms (Insomnia): As a calming remedy, cold compresses made from clay mixed with sour milk are applied to the forehead.

5. Balneotherapy (General Wellness)

Clay baths (5–6 tablespoons of clay powder per bath, water temperature 40–45°C) help stimulate the immune response, promote transdermal detoxification, and contribute to overall rejuvenation of the body.

IMPORTANT: Medical Contraindications and Precautions

Despite its natural origin, peloid therapy is an active therapeutic method and has several contraindications. The use of clay (especially oral administration) is not recommended in the following cases:

  • Acute inflammatory conditions: exacerbation of any chronic disease.

  • Kidney failure: due to the high concentration of mineral salts.

  • Individual intolerance: risk of allergic reactions to specific mineral impurities.

1. Can any pharmaceutical-grade clay be taken orally?

No. Only highly purified clay labeled as “food grade” or “pharmaceutical grade” is suitable for oral use, most commonly white kaolin. Clay intended exclusively for cosmetic masks may contain technical impurities or fragrances that are not suitable for contact with the gastrointestinal mucosa.

2. How often can clay therapy courses be repeated?

A standard therapeutic course of peloid therapy lasts 14–21 days. A break of at least 2–4 weeks between courses is essential to prevent excessive mineral accumulation in tissues and to maintain the skin’s natural water-lipid balance.

3. Does clay help with acute joint pain?

Peloids are effective in reducing chronic inflammation and swelling. However, during acute infectious conditions accompanied by localized heat, warm clay applications are contraindicated because they may intensify the inflammatory response.

4. Can clay be reused after a treatment?

Absolutely not. Clay is an active natural adsorbent that absorbs endogenous toxins, cellular metabolic by-products, and pathogenic microorganisms during treatment. Reusing previously applied clay may result in reintoxication or skin infection.
