The main character of the movie “The Pharmacist” – Dan Schneider, a pharmacist from the small town of Poydras, Louisiana, whose son is tragically killed in a drug-related shooting. Dan goes to great lengths to find his killer and get justice. He succeeds, but his investigation uncovers a much larger problem. “I started noticing a lot of young people my son’s age coming into my pharmacy with prescriptions for opioid medications, particularly OxyContin,” Schneider says.
The pharmacist is turning his personal grief into a veritable crusade to help expose corruption among the powerful figures behind the devastating opioid addiction epidemic that has unfolded in the United States.

In the U.S., it began to unfold in the late 1990s, and has led to a huge increase in opioid use and related deaths. In 2018, for example, more than 70,000 people died from overdoses of these substances in this country.
