Omega-3: the body’s defense power

When we congratulate our loved ones on holidays, we necessarily wish them good health, but the body does not always work like a good Swiss watch. Infections, viruses and other "contagions" can catch anyone. The only (and, incidentally, natural) defense of the body is the immune system, which every day stands guard over health. However, it cannot cope without our help.

Where to look for helpers

The first thing to pay attention to, if the immune system is weakened, is nutrition. Almost everyone knows about the role of vitamins, micro- and macronutrients. But not everyone knows about the fact that the diet must contain a sufficient amount of omega-3 acids. These are polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), which the body does not produce on its own. They can only be obtained with food.
The source of such acids is marine fish. Doctors advise eating one or two servings of fish dishes per week. If this is not possible, special dietary supplements containing omega-3 acids are an alternative.

Why the immune system needs omega-3s

Studies have shown that people who regularly consume adequate amounts of these acids are 18-22% less likely to get colds. Omega-3 acids are part of the cell membranes of the immune system. The membrane is a kind of skin of the cell through which nutrients enter. It retains moisture and participates in the “communication” and interaction of cells with each other.
If a person receives insufficient amounts of omega-3 acids from food, membranes become less mobile, and the immune system’s reactions to viruses and other “enemies” are slowed down.
Omega-3 acids stimulate the production of antibodies and improve the recognition of virus-infected cells in the body.

In addition, these acids have these effects on the immune system:

  • regulate the formation of white blood cells (white blood cells);
  • help eliminate inflammation, especially chronic inflammation, which impairs immunity.

Another important property of omega-3 acids is the body’s defense against cancer. From these PUFAs are formed substances that inhibit the vital activity of malignant cells. It is proven that men who consume a lot of sea fish, the risk of prostate cancer is 2-3 times lower than those who do not eat fish. Women who get the right amount of omega-3’s are less likely to get breast cancer.
Omega-3 acids not only protect against cancer, but also prevent healthy cells from overgrowing and prevent the formation of neoplasms. These acids reduce the activity of enzymes that lead to tumor growth. They also play an important role in the formation of anti-tumor immunity.

Coenzyme helper

Coenzyme Q10 is another natural immunostimulant. This substance provides the body with energy, improves heart function. Moreover, coenzyme stimulates the production of immunoglobulin contained in the blood serum, and is also an effective antioxidant. It works very well in combination with omega-3 acids.
